The European Patent Office (EPO) received more than 270,000 patent filings in 2014. This is a sort of record year for the number of filing at the office. Considering the total number of applications filed in 2014 (273.110) it is a 3% increase on 2013, when the office received 265,000. The numbers once again reflect the overall trend of the last fifth years, whereby the number of filing at the EPO has been in constant increase. “These figures are only a first estimate but they confirm Europe’s continued strength as a hub of innovation,” said EPO president Benoit Battistelli.
