On February 1, 2005, the Brazilian Federal Court of Appeals for the Second Region, covering Rio de Janeiro and Espìrito Santo, implemented specialized panels of judges and a section for the judgment of Industrial and Intellectual Property cases. Under the new organization, the Courts of Appeal will comprehend 8 panels of 3 judges each. The first and second panels will be responsible for the judgement in intellectual and industrial property matters, as well as criminal and social security matters. The expected outcome is an increase in both quality and speed of decisions in the IP area.
